Does Grit Help Loan Officers Succeed?

Last week I focused on common challenges for loan officers. This week I want to explore a particular quality that can be an invaluable asset for us — Grit. Grit is a combination of determination and passion that can help drive you forward toward your goals. It’s a quality often associated with top entrepreneurs and leaders in their field, and it’s a quality that can be of great benefit to loan officers, as well. Whether you’re just starting out as an LO, or you have a decade (or two) in the business, focusing on this sense of grit can help you achieve greater success. Let’s take a look at what grit is all about:

Maintain Focus

Having grit ensures that you stay connected to your goals. It helps you in-tune to the things that you want to achieve — even in the face of limitless distractions competing for your attention. This focus is what allows you to make consistent progress toward your goals, despite any challenges and obstacles. This maintained focus is cultivated by regularly reflecting on your goals and the work you’re putting in to see them through.

Maintain Motivation

Grit also feeds motivation. It’s a dogged determination to achieve everything we set our minds to. When you’re truly passionate about your goals and inspired by the prospect of reaching them, sustained motivation comes naturally. This pushes us to keep putting in the effort day after day. You may not see the results immediately, and there may be times where progress feels slower than at other times, but maintaining that motivation is crucial to finding success. This industry can mentally challenge even the strongest on their motivation, but those with grit keep going.

Maintain Resiliency

As mortgage professionals, we need to be able to deal with rejection and failure. Whether it’s a promising lead gone cold or a new marketing strategy that doesn’t deliver the results we were expecting — it’s essential that we learn from these experiences and keep pushing on. Getting bogged down by obstacles is common and can make us lose sight of the bigger picture, but when you have a maintained sense of resilience reminding you that these difficulties are just a bump on the path to achievement, you’ll be much less likely to let them slow your progress.

Maintain Discipline

Any goal worth achieving requires a high level of discipline and commitment. Grit is that force that keeps us on top of the daily work we need to put in to reach these goals — even on the days when we just don’t feel like it. A strong sense of discipline can aid us shaping habits and routines that support our success. Our disciplines go past our work habits; those with grit have regimented disciplined throughout their entire life. Disciplines and routines create success.

Increased grit is invaluable in helping us to achieve our goals and attain the long-term success we’re striving for. So, channel your inner John Wayne and take control of your business!
